Abstract

This study examines the growing role of digital activism and online political mobilization in shaping democratic governance in Pakistan. The rapid expansion of social media platforms, digital journalism, and online civic engagement has transformed the nature of political communication, public participation, and state-society relations. The research analyzes how digital platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok have become influential tools for political parties, activists, youth movements, and civil society organizations in mobilizing public opinion and challenging traditional political structures. Using a qualitative and interpretive approach, the study explores major political events and protest movements in Pakistan where digital activism played a central role in agenda-setting, political awareness, and collective mobilization. It also investigates the challenges associated with misinformation, political polarization, cyber surveillance, online censorship, and digital authoritarianism. The study argues that digital activism has enhanced political participation and democratized access to information, particularly among younger populations; however, it has simultaneously intensified ideological divisions and institutional tensions. Findings indicate that while digital media can strengthen democratic accountability and civic engagement, weak regulatory frameworks and political manipulation may undermine democratic stability. The paper concludes that effective digital governance, media literacy, and the protection of digital freedoms are essential for ensuring that online political participation contributes positively to democratic consolidation in Pakistan.
