Abstract

The study of the Holy Qur’an in the Western academic tradition has undergone a significant intellectual and methodological evolution from the medieval period to the twenty-first century. Western scholars have produced a substantial body of literature on various aspects of the Qur’an, including its text, history, compilation, interpretation, and intellectual influence. However, the early phase of Orientalist Qur’anic studies was often influenced not only by academic curiosity but also by religious, cultural, and political considerations. Consequently, many Muslim scholars viewed Orientalist approaches with caution and subjected their findings to critical evaluation. This paper does not aim to refute or defend Orientalist perspectives; rather, it seeks to examine the historical development, methodological approaches, and contemporary trends in Western Qur’anic studies. Particular attention is given to the transition from classical Orientalist scholarship to modern academic approaches that increasingly emphasize objectivity, interdisciplinary research, and engagement with Muslim scholarly traditions. The study explores the contributions of prominent contemporary scholars such as Carl W. Ernst, Jane Dammen McAuliffe, and Andrew Rippin, whose works reflect evolving perspectives within Western academia. Furthermore, the paper investigates the extent to which twenty-first-century Qur’anic studies differ from earlier Orientalist paradigms in terms of research methods, sources, and scholarly attitudes. It also highlights the growing participation of Muslim academics in Western universities and research institutions and its impact on creating more balanced and nuanced approaches to the study of the Qur’an. Through an analytical review of major contemporary works and intellectual trends, this study aims to provide a clearer understanding of the nature, scope, and direction of Orientalist Qur’anic studies in the modern era.
