A Research Overview of “Sirat Nigari” in Dera Ismail Khan Division

Abstract

The Arabic word Sirah literally denotes a journey, way of life, conduct, character, or manner. In Islamic scholarship, however, it refers to the discipline devoted to the biography and life of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The compilation of Sirah literature began during the earliest period of Islam, when the noble Companions (Sahabah) preserved and transmitted the events of the Prophet’s life. According to Dr. Mustafa al-Aʿzami, the earliest work on Sirah was authored by Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, whereas Haji Khalifah regards Muhammad ibn Ishaq as the first compiler of a comprehensive Sirah. Thereafter, Muslim scholars across different regions of the world produced an extensive body of Sirah literature in numerous languages. It is estimated that more than ten thousand works on the Prophet’s biography have been written in over fifty languages worldwide. Like other regions of the Muslim world, the scholars of D.I Khan Division have also made valuable contributions to Sirah literature through their scholarly writings. This article examines more than a dozen significant works authored by scholars of D.I Khan  Division, highlighting their academic contributions to the study and preservation of the Prophet’s biography and demonstrating the region’s distinguished role in the development of Sirah scholarship.
