An analytical study of the contemporary meaning of Sufi interpretations in Tafsir-e-Zia-ul-Quran

Abstract

Tafsir-e-Zia-ul-Quran is considered one of the prominent commentaries of the subcontinent. Its author, Pir Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari, has presented the moderate and reformist thoughts of Sufism in a very balanced manner along with the traditional exegetical principles in the interpretation of the Holy Quran. In this commentary, Sufi interpretations are not limited to mere esoteric references but also highlight practical and intellectual aspects such as self-purification, moral purification, spiritual training, divine love, following the Sunnah and reforming society. In the present era, when issues such as materialism, spiritual unrest, moral degradation and intellectual chaos are affecting human life, the need to re-evaluate the contemporary meaning of Sufi interpretive trends increases even more. The aim of the research under review is to conduct an analytical study of the Sufi interpretations contained in Tafsir-e-Zia-ul-Quran, clarify their Quranic and exegetical foundations, and evaluate their usefulness in the contemporary social, moral and intellectual context. The research will also clarify which concepts of Sufism the commentator has adopted in the light of the Quran and Sunnah, which unauthentic or exaggerated tendencies he has avoided, and in what way he has highlighted the interrelationship between moderation, Sharia and Tariqat. This research will be primarily qualitative in nature, in which analytical and descriptive research methods will be adopted. For this purpose, a textual analysis of selected passages of Tafsir-e-Zia-ul-Quran will be conducted and comparative use will also be made of other reliable interpretations and scholarly sources related to Sufism. It is expected that the results of this research will clarify that the Sufi interpretations presented in Tafsir-e-Zia-ul-Quran provide effective guidance in solving the spiritual, moral and social problems of the present era and play a significant role in promoting moderation, tolerance, self-purification and positive social attitudes in Islamic thought.
