The Aesthetics of Brevity (Ijāz) and Its Role in Semantic Construction in the Poetry of Ahmad Matar

Abstract

This study examines the aesthetics of brevity (Ijāz) in the poetry of Ahmad Matar and its role in constructing meaning. It aims to explore how Ahmad Matar employs concise language to express profound political, social, and human concerns through an effective stylistic structure. The study adopts an analytical stylistic approach based on the principles of classical Arabic rhetoric and modern stylistics in analyzing selected poetic texts. It highlights the artistic value of brevity and demonstrates how it contributes to the production of semantic depth through irony, paradox, symbolism, and dialogue. The findings reveal that brevity in Ahmad Matar's poetry is not merely a reduction in words, but a deliberate artistic technique that intensifies meaning, strengthens expression, and enriches the poetic discourse. The study also concludes that semantic construction in Ahmad Matar's poetry is predominantly political while simultaneously reflecting social and human dimensions. Therefore, brevity represents one of the most significant stylistic features of Ahmad Matar's poetry and plays a fundamental role in shaping its aesthetic and semantic structure.
