Pashto, an Eastern Iranian language, has been deeply influenced by Persian across linguistic, literary, and cultural domains due to centuries of coexistence and interaction. Linguistically, Persian has contributed extensively to Pashto vocabulary, especially in areas such as administration, education, religion, and literature. Persian prefixes, suffixes, and idiomatic expressions are also embedded in modern Pashto. In literature, Persian poetic forms were adopted by major Pashto poets. Persian themes of love, mysticism, and morality enriched Pashto poetic content and style. Culturally, Persian influenced Pashtun traditions, values, and artistic expression, shaping etiquette, dress, architecture, and storytelling. Despite these influences, Pashto maintained its distinct identity while absorbing and localizing Persian elements. This shared heritage underscores the close historical and cultural ties between the two Iranian languages.
