A Research Study on the Principles of Personality Development in the Light of the Qur’an and Sunnah

Abstract

The true purpose of human life is the construction and fortification of personality. The river of life carries with it the chronicles of millions of years of ups and downs, while ahead lies an ocean of endless possibilities stretching into eternity. Man, poised between these two shores, is a brief yet delicate and supremely significant link. The Lord of the universe, in His infinite wisdom, has arranged guidance and enlightenment for all of creation. Unlike other beings, man has been endowed with the privilege of will and choice in his actions, yet despite this he remains in need of direction and guidance. To fulfill this innate need, Allah Almighty sent His chosen Prophets in every age, whose foremost mission was the training of mankind and the shaping of their character. The Prophets continued to convey the message of truth and guidance, striving to nurture such noble souls who could lay the foundations of a righteous and purposeful society. Thus, the construction of personality and the building of society are, in fact, the very spirit and essential aim of Prophethood. With the conclusion of this sacred chain, the noble saints, the righteous scholars, and the perfected Sufis devoted themselves tirelessly to this mission. Through their sincere efforts and unrelenting struggles, the process of human refinement and perfection continued its journey toward completion.The Holy Qur’an has eloquently and comprehensively outlined the requisites of personality-building in a style accessible to all, while the system of life established by the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) stands as a complete and universal program for the development of human character. By following this path, individuals and nations, each according to their capacity, traverse the stages of eternity and attain the stations of Divine knowledge and gnosis.In the present article, an attempt has been made to study the continuity and permanence of personality development in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
