Abstract

This paper presents a critical and analytical overview of the evolution of Islamic political thought, tracing its trajectory from the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphate to the perspectives of contemporary Muslim thinkers. It analyzes the historical formulation and practical implementation of core Islamic political principles such as justice, shūrā (consultation), bay‘ah (pledge of allegiance), and accountability. Special attention is given to the contributions of influential scholars like Al-Farabi (872–950 CE), Al-Mawardi (972–1058 CE), Al-Ghazali (1058–1111 CE), Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406 CE), Shah Waliullah Dehlawi (1703–1762), Dr. M Iqbal (1877-1938), Syed Abul A'la Maududi (1903–1979),Sayyid Qutb (1906–1966) and Dr. Israr Ahmad, who have attempted to reinterpret the concept of an Islamic state in the modern context. The core principles of Islamic governance, including shura, ijtihad, justice, and equality, remain relevant today, providing valuable insights into the complexities of Islamic politics and governance. Understanding the historical development of Muslim political thought is essential for comprehending its relevance in contemporary times and its potential to shape the future of Muslim societies. The paper highlights both continuity and change within Islamic political thought and offers a framework for contemporary Muslim states to draw intellectual guidance from Islamic tradition.
