Abstract

Dr. Tabassum Kashmiri stands as a transformative figure in the tradition of Urdu literary historiography. His monumental work, "History of Urdu Literature (From the Beginning to 1857)," marks a significant departure from traditional biographical-centric accounts toward a modern, scientific, and visionary framework. Influenced by the French Annales School, Kashmiri introduces the concept of "Total History," where literature is analyzed not in isolation but through an interdisciplinary lens encompassing sociology, economics, psychology, and mythology. This article explores the unique characteristics of Kashmiri’s historiography, specifically his application of "History from Below," which prioritizes the socio-economic conditions of the common man over elite narratives. It further examines his psychoanalytical approach to classical poets, his objective deconstruction of prejudices against the Lucknow School (Dabistan-e-Lucknow), and his innovative use of visual historiography through maps and manuscripts. By blending rigorous research with a creative narrative style, Kashmiri elevates the writing of history to an "Art Form." This study highlights how his methodology provides a new visionary perspective, making him a unique and modern historian in the Urdu literary landscape.
