In the contemporary socio-political and educational landscape, Islamic seminaries or madrassas hold a pivotal position, especially in Muslim-majority societies. Historically, madrassas have been centers of religious, intellectual, and civic development. However, their role and responsibilities have come under renewed scrutiny in the modern era, marked by rapid globalization, technological change, and evolving social dynamics. This analytical study explores the social and societal responsibilities of madrassas in today’s context, examining both their traditional functions and the expectations placed upon them in contemporary society. The primary objective of this study is to critically evaluate how madrassas can contribute positively to modern social development while remaining anchored in Islamic traditions. Drawing upon classical Islamic scholarship, historical functions of madrassas, contemporary educational challenges, and socio-religious demands, the paper outlines a multi-dimensional framework through which madrassas can fulfill their social responsibilities.
