Abstract

Allah Almighty sent prophets and messengers in every age for the guidance of humanity, and they brought with them their respective divine laws. Some people followed them, while others rejected them; as a result, many religions came into existence in the world. Moreover, every individual has the freedom to follow whichever religion he or she chooses. Consequently, respect for every person’s religion, sacred books, rituals, and religious personalities becomes obligatory upon all. Under the pretext of freedom of expression, engaging in abuse or vilification of any religious personality is condemnable, regardless of the religion or sect to which that personality belongs. This article will discuss the legislation enacted in the West regarding blasphemy against religion and religious personalities, as well as the concept found among Muslims, including its introduction, Sharīʿah status, and related discussions. Furthermore, the history of blasphemy against the Prophet under the guise of freedom of expression, and the resulting confrontation between Islam and the West, will be examined from an Islamic perspective.
