This paper critically examines the intricate relationship and dynamic interactions between literature and civilization, emphasizing their interdependence and mutual influence. It argues that literature and civilization are inseparable constructs, where civilization provides the cultural, social, ethical, and spiritual context necessary for literary creation, and literature, in turn, acts as a reflective mirror and expressive vehicle of civilization’s values, customs, and identity.
Through theoretical exploration and analysis of diverse literary genres, the study highlights how literature embodies the collective memory, cultural ethos, and evolving identities of civilizations. It also elucidates the role of literature in preserving, critiquing, and transmitting civilizational heritage across generations, thereby fostering social cohesion, empathy, and intercultural dialogue.
The paper further briefly touches upon the Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan Civilization) as an example of how ancient civilizations find renewed representation in contemporary Urdu historical fiction, illustrating the enduring relevance of literature in reconstructing and sustaining civilizational narratives.
Ultimately, this research underscores that literature and civilization maintain a symbiotic relationship, with literature serving as both a product and a producer of civilization, shaping and shaped by the cultural and historical contexts from which it emerges.
