This paper examines the character of female protagonist Hester Prynne in Hawthorne’s novel the Scarlet Letter (1850) through the lens of Freudian Psychoanalysis. The discussion in this paper consists of information as presented by Freudian Psychoanalysis which notes that an individual most of the times is influenced by unconscious factors in context of behaviour, emotions and decisions. And these unconscious factors by influencing the affected person get expressed through multiple symptoms of disturbing personality traits, disturbances in self-esteem and difficulty in relating to others. The study through Freudian theoretical framework and method of textual analysis highlights the theme of war within as represented by Hester Prynne through her actions in her miserable life of romantic entanglements.
