PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE SHORT STORY “OVERCOAT” BY GHULAM ABBAS
Abstract
In Urdu short fiction, the contribution of Ghulam Abbas holds remarkable significance, to the extent that his work may confidently be included even in the most selective anthologies of Urdu literature. He stands alongside eminent short story writers such as Premchand, Saadat Hassan Manto, and Rajinder Singh Bedi in terms of literary stature and artistic excellence. Although Ghulam Abbas produced a relatively limited body of work, he consistently preserved the artistic quality and intellectual depth of his fiction across different periods. He possessed a profound understanding of the craft of the afsana (short story), which is evident in celebrated works such as “Hamsaaye,” “Juwaari,” “Naak Kaatne Waale”,“Barda Farosh,” and “Fancy Hair Cutting Salon.” These stories have exerted an enduring influence rather than a merely temporary impact. Instead of relying on popular literary techniques to attain immediate fame, Abbas sought to elevate readers to the aesthetic and intellectual level of his art. Consequently, the influence of his stories has continued to transcend generations, further consolidating his literary reputation over time.
Ghulam Abbas attempted to capture the broader collective experience of human life in his fiction. His stories do not revolve around a single dominant protagonist; rather, they explore the deeper dimensions of life through the actions, interactions, and experiences of multiple characters. He establishes a distinct thematic framework for each narrative and develops the entire artistic progression of the story within that conceptual sphere.
In stories such as “Katba” and “Overcoat,” Abbas depicts the harsh realities of poverty and social deprivation. However, his fiction avoids overt propaganda and direct moralization. Instead, he presents nuanced reflections of human existence through subtle artistic representation. His narratives offer profound psychological insights into human desires, emotions, and behavioral complexities.
