A Comparative Study of Word Diction Preferences in Urdu Translations of the Quran

Abstract

In the Indo-Pak subcontinent, various Urdu translations of the Quran are widely circulated and read by a vast population. These translations serve as the primary medium for the Urdu-speaking community to understand the divine meanings and objectives of the Quran. Naturally, transitioning from Arabic to Urdu leads to a rich diversity in diction and sentence structure. During the translation process, scholars must navigate rhetorical nuances such as eloquence, metaphor, context, and divine intent—all while reflecting their own academic background and interpretive vision when selecting specific words. Consequently, the Urdu translations of the region exhibit distinct textual and semantic variations, which at times significantly influence the interpretation of meanings, legal rulings, and divine purpose.
