REGISTER ANALYSIS OF BBC BLOG POSTS

This study investigates the variation of register within a single subject domain by examining three purposively chosen blog posts on Technology and Artificial Intelligence about wearable devices, autonomous delivery robots and cognitive effects of AI use. Drawing on Halliday’s (1978) Systemic Functional Linguistics and its model of Field, Tenor and Mode, the study has three aims: to identify the linguistic characteristics of register (vocabulary, tone, sentence structure); to analyze the interplay of Field, Tenor and Mode in the creation of communicative style; and to investigate the degree of hybridization between formal journalistic and informal digital-writing conventions in these texts. The analysis is based on a qualitative descriptive research design and involves close textual reading of each post and cross-textual synthesis. The analysis demonstrates that even within the same domain, register is not homogenous, but varies according to communicative purpose and section. In all three texts, lexis consistently combines specialised technological lexis with accessible lay lexis, but tone and sentence structure are markedly different, from the more news-oriented texts where evaluation is always mediated through quotation to the more essayistic post which is confessional, first-person hedging. It was found that Field, Tenor and Mode worked in conjunction rather than independently, and technology was repeatedly constructed as Actor acting upon a comparatively passive human participant. All three texts mix formal conventions (attributed sourcing, cautious modality, structured paragraphing) with informal, digital-native features (contractions, rhetorical questions, colloquial idiom) but the extent and manner of combination differs, producing a graded continuum mediated by authorial persona and communicative purpose rather than by topic. The study finds that the BBC blog post is a flexible hybrid register space even within a single domain, extending Halliday’s SFL model to contemporary digital journalism.
