Revival of Sunnah and Promotion of Hadith in the Subcontinent: An Analytical Study of Sayyid Nazir Husain Dehlawi's Scholarly and Pedagogical Services

Abstract

This study presents an analytical examination of the scholarly and pedagogical contributions of Sayyid Nazir Husain Muhaddith Dehlawi (popularly known as Mīāñ Ṣāḥib) toward the revival of the Prophetic Sunnah and the propagation of Hadith studies in the Indian Subcontinent. Following the decline of Mughal authority and the shift in religious leadership after the Waliullah initiative, Sayyid Nazir Husain emerged as a central figure in preserving and revitalizing Hadith scholarship for over half a century in Delhi. Utilizing a historical and analytical methodology, this paper investigates his ancestral background, educational trajectory under the legacy of Shah Muhammad Ishaq, and his pivotal role in establishing Delhi as a premier hub for Hadith studies. The research further highlights his method of instruction, which trained students across diverse legal schools to engage directly with foundational texts, and details his major literary work, Fatāwā Nazīriyyah, alongside his theological-jurisprudential treatise Maʿyār al-Ḥaqq. Additionally, the paper examines the socio-political challenges and trials he faced during the British colonial era, including his imprisonment and ideological opposition. Ultimately, this research underscores his enduring impact in bridging traditional Hadith sciences with broader reformative movements across South Asia.
