The Methodology of Maulana Taqi Amini for the Reconstruction of Islamic Studies: A Critical and Analytical Study

Abstract

This study examines the methodological framework adopted by Maulana Muhammad Taqi Amini for the reconstruction of Islamic sciences. It argues that his approach does not seek to alter the foundational sources of Islam; rather, it aims to reorganize, interpret, and apply the classical scholarly legacy in response to contemporary intellectual, social, educational, and legal challenges. The article first clarifies the meaning, need, and historical background of reconstruction in Islamic scholarship. It then identifies the main features of Amini's method, including the centrality of the Qur'an and Sunnah, a balanced use of ijtihad and tajdid, harmony between enduring Islamic principles and changing circumstances, attention to the objectives of Shariah, and concern for the practical needs of the Muslim community. The study concludes that Amini's framework represents a balanced model that preserves authenticity while enabling Islamic scholarship to remain intellectually relevant and socially effective in the modern age.
